Welcome

The transitional Council of the College of Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists is the governing body of a new health regulatory college, currently under development in Ontario.  Members of the Council were appointed in September, 2009 by order-in-council of the Government of Ontario.  Some Council members are practitioners of psychotherapy and others are members of the public.

Independent practice for RMHTs
At Council’s March 30th, 2012 meeting, a major topic for discussion was the issue of independent practice for Registered Mental Health Therapists (RMHTs). This was a controversial issue among stakeholders, based on feedback received during the statutory consultation period (July-Sept ’11), and recirculation of parts of the Registration Regulation Jan-Mar ’12.
 
Registration Committee wrestled with the question at its March meeting but came to no resolution.  As a result, various options were presented to Council; however, when it became clear that there was no consensus on the meaning of “independent practice”, the matter was referred back to Registration Committee for further deliberation.  
 
The core issue is the belief by some stakeholders that RMHTs should never practice independently under that title, no matter how much experience or upgrading they may have. Others believe that RMHTs are fundamentally a different kind of practitioner with particular training and expertise in a field of practice related to psychotherapy (e.g. addiction counseling), in which they use the techniques of psychotherapy. The transitional Council held its inaugural meeting in November, 2009. Observers are welcome at attend Council meetings, normally held at Council offices, located in Toronto at Queen St. East and Jarvis St.
